Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point
Located 20 miles southeast of New Bern on the Neuse River, MCAS Cherry Point is a primary aviation supply point. It is one of the largest Marine Corps air stations in the U.S. It has support facilities for the Second Marine Aircraft Wing (2nd MAW) and the Atlantic Fleet Marine Force aviation units; Combat Logistics Company 21 supports the 2nd MAW. MCAS Cherry Point also houses the Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE). In addition, Marine Transport Squadron One (VMR 1), which transports key personnel, also provides medical evacuation and search and rescue services to the local community. The Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATT) conducts specialized training in aviation maintenance on weapons systems.
Like many military bases in the U.S., MCAS Cherry Point was established during World War II; soldiers heading to the action in the Pacific trained here. Service members preparing for action in the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom operations were also trained here. Cherry Point’s massive four-point runway system allows for multiple approach and departure advantages. There are also ranges and auxiliary landing fields which provide the opportunity to train for take-offs and landings in regions along a shoreline. The Neuse River runs along the north side of the Air Station, while the Alligator Gut stream flows along the western edge, and Hancock Creek runs along the eastern edge. In addition, many smaller streams and creeks in this swampy region.
