Military Installations Near Hilton Head Island/Bluffton, SC
There are eight military bases in South Carolina; three are within an hour’s drive of Hilton Head Island and Bluffton and are in or near Beaufort.
Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort (MCAS Beaufort) – More than 4,000 personnel serve at this airbase located about three miles from the center of Beaufort. Two F-385B Lighting II training squads and four F/A-18 Hornet fighter-attack squadrons are housed here, along with two Navy strike fighter squadrons. All active-duty F/A-18 air operations on the East Coast originate here; the aircraft and its squadron are assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 31. In addition, the F/A-18 squadrons rotate overseas regularly when US military objectives require airborne strikes and as support for ground forces. Like many airbases, MCAS Beaufort hosts a bi-annual air show open to the public.
Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island (MCRD PI) – Each year, about 17,000 recruits pass through MCRD PI, one of two Marine recruit training facilities in the country. Recruits who live west of the Mississippi River head for the facility in San Diego, while those who reside east of the river come to MCRD PI, located about ten miles south of Beaufort. More than half of Parris Island’s 8,000 acres are uninhabitable salt marsh. In training that emphasizes physical fitness and combat effectiveness, recruits must adapt to the Marine Corps way; they are cut off from the civilian world for thirteen weeks. “The Crucible”—a 54-hour training exercise—caps the program. With limited food and sleep, squads of recruits have their physical strength and skills tested, as well as their adherence to Marine Corps values. The Crucible ends with a nine-mile hike from the training grounds to a statue depicting six Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima during World War II. After completing training at Parris Island, recruits go on to infantry school.
Naval Hospital Beaufort – This facility provides medical services to more than 30,000 active-duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps members and their dependents living in the Beaufort area. The hospital also has branch clinics at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, and the nearby Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort. Health services include primary care, hospital care and surgery, treatment for mental health and substance abuse issues, tests and x-rays, specialty care, dental care, and children’s health. The hospital also has a pharmacy. Naval Hospital Beaufort is unusual for its designation as a complete military compound rather than a tenant of a larger command. More than 100 acres comprise the grounds, which include housing units, a Navy Exchange Retail store, a gas station, and a Public Works facility. Softball fields, tennis courts, and a swimming pool are among the recreational facilities on the grounds. The nearby Naval Heritage Park is known for its Live Oak Trees.
