Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base
Part of the United States Air Force, Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base hosts the 117th Air Refueling Wing of the Air National Guard, based at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. It operates the KC-135R Stratotanker, a military aerial refueling aircraft that transfers aviation fuel to another military aircraft during flight. The unit trains and equips aircrews and support personnel for air refueling and airlift missions worldwide. In addition, the Governor of Alabama has the authority to direct the wing to support state and local contingencies. If it is activated to federal service, the wing joins the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command. Units of the 117th include:
- 117th Operations Group
- 117th Medical Group
- 117th Maintenance Group
- 117th Mission Support Group
- 99th Air Refueling Squadron
- 106th Air Refueling Squadron
- 117th Intelligence Squadron
The 106th Air Refueling Squadron is descended from the 106th Aero Squadron established in 1917 during World War I.
Groups of the 117th Air Refueling Wing have taken part in some of the more famous conflicts and missions in US military history. The 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Group was elevated to wing status when it went active during the Korean War. In 1961, the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron provided air support during the Berlin Crisis, which saw Soviet construction of the Berlin Wall. In 1960-1961, there was a covert CIA operation to invade Cuba and depose President Fidel Castro. Members of the 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Group advised and trained the Cuban Liberation Air Force. Four airmen died when Cuban forces shot down two B-26 bombers during the Bay of Pigs invasion in April 1961; the mission was classified until 1998. In 2001, the 117th Air Refueling Wing joined Operation Noble Eagle after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; they refueled F-15 and F-16 aircraft flying over major cities in the southeast.
