Georgia’s Fort Gordon to Become “Fort Eisenhower”—What Military Personnel and Residents Need to Know
As part of an effort to distance the United States military from America’s Confederate history, Georgia’s Fort Gordon (formerly Camp Gordon) will become Fort Eisenhower in the Fall of 2023.
The rebrand is part of the Department of Defense’s renaming of nine military bases previously affiliated with generals and soldiers who served in the Confederate States Army.
The name Fort Gordon derived from John Brown Gordon, a major general in the Confederate Army. Gordon was reportedly one of Robert E. Lee’s most trusted generals, but his ties to the Confederacy prompted his name’s removal from the military base.
WWII Commanding General and former President Dwight D. Eisenhower will now be the namesake of Fort Eisenhower. As general, Eisenhower oversaw the Allies’ defeat of the Axis forces and then became one of America’s most beloved presidents. Eisenhower may attend the renaming ceremony in the Fall.

Located a few miles southwest of Augusta, GA, Fort Eisenhower is the site of the 35th Signal Brigade, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, and the Regional Security Operations Center. Signal soldiers (in charge of communication systems) and ordnance soldiers (who facilitate the supply of munitions) call Fort Eisenhower (or Fort Gordon) home.
Spanning over 55,500 acres, Fort Eisenhower accommodates more than 16,000 troops, approximately 13,500 civilian personnel, and about 4,000 military family members.
